Lesson 1 - Introduction

Welcome to our E-learning system.

This e-learning course is build on a course we over many years and with great success have held as a face to face teaching course. The classroom teaching, used exact the same material that is presented here, other than it was and is continually updated. A E-learning course in music will be a little handicapped in comparison with classroom teaching – Maybe music is understood by your mind, but it is appreciated with your ears and heart, We have, however, often been asked to make the material available to more people where distance etc. makes weekend workshops impossible.

How the course is build up
The course is build up as a series of related quotes from many different sources, bound together by our own understanding of the topic at hand.

No-one can be counsellors from theoretical knowledge alone.. In the topic of working with music it is even more obvious – no matter how much theory you know, the music will only be magic if you have affinity – knowing and openness of the “message” in the music If music is used in the area of transpersonal counselling, and not least in the area of death and dying, it is obvious, right use of music can alone bring about powerful transformation – and for the same reason, wrong use of music can be quite hellish. It is therefore with a mixture of joy – because this material is a synthesis of my own experiences and love of music – and caution – because there is not a single sound-bit in this course, so the whole “training of the ear” is left for the individual, that I release this course on the net.

We ask of you that you consciously take responsibility for your own health and well-being, and we understand your signing up for this course as a acknowledgement of that.

We offer face to face training and supervision both in individual sessions, and in groups at Starbridge (groups are offered according to need and time available).

We continue to also offer the face to face certificate workshops where both teaching and training is integrated. The link to these courses can be found on the main menu. We also frequently have experiential workshops in Higher Music here at Starbridge Centre)

Please note that as a student we expect that you

  • Promise to respect the confidentiality of information regarding other members in the group.

  • Are not currently under psychiatric treatment without letting us know.

  • Agree to maintain the full responsibility for your physical and psychological well being during the full course.

How to study

You can approach this course in two ways: Read the online text, answer the multiple choice questions, and that is it, or do that, and write the essays and submit them to us.
In the first instance you will not receive a certificate, acknowledging that you successfully passed the course, in the second case you will. The service we offer is the same.

A good way of studying this is first to read the chapter through in its entirety, then go back to the beginning and take each quote, one at a time, stay with it until it makes sense, think about it in its own right, and then move to the next quote, and think about the related quotes as a whole
In short, do not just read, study. If you have any questions, feel free to email us, emails will be checked and answered daily.

It is our experience that a proper assimilation of this material
will take at least 1/2 year.

The theoretical part of the course consist of 36 topics. To help you check how much you have assimilated, each chapter conclude with a multiple choice test.

Exam

You only need to bother about this if you want Starbridge Centres

formal recognition of your study

The exam consists of two aspects:

  • That you have passed the individual multiple choice tests at the end of each chapter.

  • You must write one essay, 4-pages. The essay must be based on material covered in the course, cross referenced with relevant quotes from the teaching and with additional sources from the literature

The essay needs to be written with cross references to the material and your personal comments to this. You are most welcome to agree or disagree with us, as long as we can follow your reasoning.

Please note that since this is an exam in our teaching, the topic for your assignment, and the techniques and exercises described, must be anchored in our teaching.

Passing these two tests ensure a good theoretical understanding of the field

We charge $ 50 for the correction of your assignment which has to be paid before we send you the certificate. (This can be paid by paypal, see under exam in term 4)
Remember to provide us with a address to which we can send your certificate.

Only after both theoretical and practical training can one be fit is a practising caregiver.
